The world is going to end.

Today I went to some festival thing on the beach, and got to hang out with a lot of my high school friends. One piece of news startled me the most..

Let me give you some background information. I befriended this kid named Jon _____, a really good video editor and photographer. Along with that, he was what I define as the word "punk".
He had the look: bondage spiked belt, thrift store clothes (from a thrift store, not from Hot Topic's "made to look old" collection), razorblade on a necklace, 1 foot tall mohawk, and accompanying Anti-Flag or Rancid or The Culprits etc tshirt. He wasn't very 'approachable' looking.
He listened to the music. He was the man that turned me on to punk, when he took out one of my crappy mixed CDRs of Disturbed/Spineshank/CRAP and replaced it with "Die For Your Government" by Anti-Flag. He would smuggle his way into concerts all over, some hours away.
He had the MENTALITY. Thats the true beauty of a punk. You can't accept things for face value: there is always something that isn't apparant. He was smart: took AP classes, listened to underground news radio, went to speaches and barely ever skipped school.

He joined the army.

The kid that hada a "Too smart to fight, too smart to kill" patch on his backpack, who got a refferal for "saluting the flag with his middle finger", the man that used to honestly ask the Navy ercruiters at our school why they wanted to recruit children to learn to kill.. JOINED THE ARMY.

This man was my idol. He was straight edge, he made me open my eyes to find other things to do besides go to parties and get drunk. He could find something fun to do in any situation or environment, and was never in a bad mood. His appearance intimidated people, but once you talked to him you would realize he was a great intelligent guy.

The man that used to walk around singing "you gotta die, gotta die, gotta die for your government? die for your country? thats shit!" and put a "fuck authority" sticker on a cop car and took a picture of it.. has gone and joined the United States Army.

If the most punk person that I know joined the Army VOLUNTARILY (he wasn't forced to, he had good grades and made plenty of money editing videos), there is no hope for the future. Just like Steve-O said in SLC Punk: this is a fucked up world.
